Note from Joe Horn to Michael VanLoon on HP's BBS:
Michael--
The "A" in your serial number merely refers to the country in which it
was manufactured. "A" means USA (America, I guess); "S"=Singapore;
"J"=Japan, I think "U"=England (United Kingdom?), and there are others
that I've forgotten.
If you wish to see your ROM version, there are two ways:
1) #30794h SYSEVAL *or*
2) ON-D backarrow EVAL (observe display) ON-C.
The #1 method, found on page 372 of the HP 48 Programmer's Reference
Manual, is preferred, because it leaves the machine status intact. But
if you type the hex number in wrong, you can get a memory lost!
The #2 method loses some stuff, like your current stack & last stack &
last args & current menu & last menu, but nothing tragic.
A method I've not heard anyone mention, and an easy one at that, is
merely to use your computer's file editor to peek into the beginning of
any file that you've saved to disk in binary format. You'll notice that
it starts with HPHP48-A or -B... the same string seen in method #1
above. You can, in fact, see your friends' ROM versions in the files
that you download from them!
